Day 1

Domestic flight to Semera – gateway to the Danakil Depression

Flight time: 1.5 h

Maybe you just arrived to Addis Ababa, or you have just completed another part of your Ethiopia trip. Anyway, your journey continues with an afternoon flight to Semera, the southern entrance to the captivating Danakil Depression. This remote town acts as the starting point for your adventure, offering a unique introduction to the Afar region. Upon arrival, settle in and prepare for the exciting days ahead, where you’ll explore some of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary landscapes. Enjoy a peaceful evening, ready to immerse yourself in an adventure like no other.

Day 2

Reach the salt flats of Hammed Ela through the desert

Travel time: 6-7 h

Start your day with a drive across the Afar desert to Hammed Ela, a remote town situated near Ethiopia’s famous salt flats. As you journey deeper into the Danakil Depression, you'll encounter camel caravans and local salt miners, offering insight into the traditional livelihoods sustained by this harsh environment. In the evening, witness a spectacular sunset, as the sun reflects off the shimmering salt surfaces, creating an otherworldly experience that will leave you in awe.

Day 3

Dallol and Erta Ale – Explore Surreal Landscapes & Lava Lakes

Travel time: 5 h


Today, head out for an exciting exploration of Dallol, one of the most surreal landscapes on Earth. With vibrant hues of yellow, green, and red created by the unique sulfur and mineral deposits, Dallol is a photographer’s dream and an adventurer’s paradise. After exploring Dallol, continue your journey to Erta Ale, an active volcano known for its active lava lake. Walk to the summit in the evening and marvel at the molten lava, a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Witness the power of nature as the glowing lava creates a mesmerizing display under the stars.

Day 4

Return to Semera and fly to Addis Ababa

Travel time: 5 h  

On the final day, leave the wonders of Erta Ale behind and drive back to Semera where you can have a shower in a day-use room. Take in the vast desert landscapes one last time before catching your flight back to Addis Ababa. Reflect on the unique experiences of the past few days—from vibrant salt lakes and volcanic landscapes to encounters with local culture—and feel a deep sense of connection with Ethiopia’s untamed beauty.
